Timeline Item 1
Project REECO (Regeneration of Ecosystems) is being implemented in one of the oldest
exploration areas in South America, which has experienced over 450 years of
degradation. Despite this, the region boasts rich biodiversity, thanks to the remnants of
the Atlantic Forest, which support a wide variety of flora and fauna.
The local economy is diverse, with well-developed industrial and service sectors, (150km)
From Rio de Janeiro and 250KM from Sao Paulo) and there is significant potential to
revive agricultural activities that have been declining over the past 50 years.
The potential for increasing the native vegetation index is promising, especially due to
the area’s proximity to Itatiaia National Park and other protected regions.
